US sharemarkets eased on Monday but were trading off the lowest levels in afternoon trade. Energy stocks traded lower in line with a weaker oil price. At the close of trade to go, the Dow Jones index was down by almost 24 points or 0.1% after earlier being down 115 points. The S&P 500 was down by 0.2% while the Nasdaq eased by 7.5 points or 0.2%.

European shares fell on Monday - the first full day of trade post-Christmas. Lower oil prices weighed on energy companies while investors also cited another fall in profits by Chinese industrial companies.

US sharemarkets continued to recover after last week's post Federal Reserve meeting sell-off. At the close the Dow Jones index was up by 165 points or 1.0%, after being up around 200 points.
