US sharemarkets rallied in the last half hour of trade, on Monday, reversing earlier losses. Oil prices steadied and the S&P energy sector reversed course and was up 0.8% in late trade. The FOMC two-day policy meeting begins on Tuesday and kept investors cautious. At the close of trade left, the Dow Jones index was up 103 points or 0.6% with the S&P 500 up 0.5% while the Nasdaq gained 19 points or 0.4%.

The ASX 200 has closed down 100 points or 2% to a three month low of 4,928. Every sector suffered steep losses, but it was the energy stocks that were the hardest hit as oil prices continued to fall. The sector dropped 3.3%, adding to last week’s 11.2% plunge.

US sharemarkets fell sharply on Friday ahead of a potential US rate hike, Chinese Yuan concerns and sliding oil prices. The VIX jumped 26%. The S&P energy index fell by 3.4%. The Dow Jones index fell by 310 points or 1.8% with the S&P 500 down 1.9% while the Nasdaq lost 112 points or 2.2%. For the week the Dow Jones lost 3.3%, the S&P 500 fell 3.8% and Nasdaq lost 4.1%.
