* European shares slumped on Tuesday dragged down by weakness in the mining sector. Shares in Anglo American fell by 12.3% after the company announced restructuring measures including the suspension of the dividend. In London trade, shares in BHP Billiton were down by 5.5% while Rio Tinto fell by 8.4%. The FTSEurofirst 300 index fell by 1.8% while the German Dax lost 2.0% while the UK FTSE lost 1.4%.
* US sharemarkets were mixed on Tuesday. Shares in oil producers continued to fall in response to lower oil prices. Mining companies weakened in response to the restructuring measures outlined by Anglo American. With almost an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones index was down by 120 points or 0.7% with the S&P 500 down 0.4% while the Nasdaq was up by 6 points or 0.1%.

US sharemarkets fell on Monday driven by weakness in energy and resource stocks. The stronger US dollar added to the weakness in commodity prices. Exxon Mobil lost over 3% while Chevron lost 2.2%. The S&P materials index fell 1.8%. However the fall in oil prices supported airline stocks with the S&P airlines index lifting 2.3% to its highest level in 11 months. At the close of trade the Dow Jones index was down by 117 points or 0.7% with the S&P 500 down 0.7% while the Nasdaq lost 40 points or 0.8%.

US sharemarkets soared on Friday with strong jobs data reassuring investors about the state of the US economy. Investors believe that the strong data justifies the Federal Reserve lifting rates next week. Financials led the gains but the energy sector eased. The Dow Jones index rose by 370 points or 2.1% with the S&P 500 also up 2.1% while the Nasdaq was up by almost 105 points or 2.1%. Over the week the Dow and Nasdaq rose by 0.3% and the S&P 500 rose by 0.1%.
