US sharemarkets fell on Monday as investors reacted to the same concerns as investors in Europe: weaker Chinese economic data, Middle East tensions and a slump in the Chinese sharemarket. After being down 467 points, the Dow Jones index closed down by 276 points

In China the Caixin manufacturing index fell from 48.6 to 48.2 in December (forecast 49.0). Earlier on Friday the "official" Chinese purchasing managers index for manufacturing rose from 49.6 to 49.7 in December.

 

* European shares fell on Monday. Investors fretted about a near 7% fall in the Chinese sharemarket causing authorities to close the market early. And there were worries about tensions in the Middle East after the violent reaction in Iran to Saudi Arabia's execution of a prominent Shi'ite cleric.

With an hour of trade to go, the Dow Jones index was down by 390 points or 2.3% with the S&P 500 lower by 2.2% while the Nasdaq was down by 130 points or 2.6%.

The local share market has given up early gains, weighed down by falls in the financial sector & a disappointing Caixin PMI reading for December. The ASX 200 ended down 24 points or 0.5%.

 The ASX 200 is up 0.3%, boosted by strong gains in the energy sector. However, the market is being held back by falls in the financial sector.

US sharemarkets eased on Thursday. Shares in Apple fell by 1.9%, weighing on major indexes. At the close, the Dow Jones index was down by 179 points or 1.0% with the S&P 500 lower by 0.9% while the Nasdaq was down by 58 points or 1.2%. Over 2015 the Dow fell 2.2% with the S&P 500 down 0.7% while the Nasdaq rose by 5.7%.
