The Chinese economy grew at a 6.8% annual rate in the December quarter, near forecasts of 6.9%.

 

* The International Monetary Fund expects the global economy to grow by 3.4% in 2016, up from 3.1% in 2015 but down from the 3.6% forecast made in October. Growth of 3.6% is expected in 2017.

 

* US sharemarkets fell in afternoon trade after spiking higher at the open of trade. Traders absorbed economic data and earnings results from Morgan Stanley and Bank of America. After being up 183 points at one stage, with an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones was down by 85 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 was down by 0.8% while the Nasdaq lost 55 points or 1.2%.

The CBA BSI rose 0.3% in trend terms in Dec, after lifting by 0.4% in Nov & 0.5% in Oct. Despite the slowdown in monthly growth, annual trend growth held at 7.2% for the fourth straight month, well above the decade-average of 5.1%.

The ASX 200 has recovered from a choppy start to finish up 44 points or 0.9%. The market was boosted by solid improvements in the materials and financial sectors.

The Chinese economy expanded at an annual pace of 6.8% in 2015, the weakest growth since 1990. Retail Sales, Fixed Asset Investment and Industrial Production data all missed consensus forecasts.

Rio Tinto boosted iron ore shipments by 11% in 2015, but has fallen short of its full year guidance of 340 million tonnes.

US sharemarkets were closed for the Martin Luther King Junior holiday. 

Global oil prices eased on Monday in electronic trade after Western sanctions were lifted on Iranian oil exports over the weekend. Brent crude fell  by US38c or 1.3% to US$28.56 a barrel with US Nymex down by US48c or 1.6% to US$28.94 a barrel.

European shares ended only modestly lower on Monday. Banking stocks fell on news that the European Central Bank (ECB) was reviewing some non-performing loans.
