US sharemarkets fell in line with European markets on Tuesday due to weakness in the energy sector. But defensive areas like telecom, utilities and consumer staples received support. At the close of trade to go the Dow Jones was lower by almost 296 points or 1.8% after being down 341 points at one stage. The S&P 500 fell by 1.9% and the Nasdaq was lower by 103 points or 2.2%. 

Global oil prices fell again on Tuesday. Analysts continue to express doubts about the likelihood of an agreement by major oil producers to limit production. And prospects of mild weather in the US over the next few weeks may serve to limit short term demand for heating oil. Brent crude fell by US$1.52 or 4.4% to US$32.72 a barrel. US Nymex fell by US$1.74 or 5.5% to US$29.88 a barrel.

With around an hour of trade to go the Dow Jones was lower by 284 points or 1.7% with the S&P 500 down 1.8% and the Nasdaq was lower by 98 points or 2.1%.

 The ASX 200 has lost 50 points or 1% to close at 4,993. The energy sector was the worst performer, dropping 3.4%, while losses in the materials and financial sectors also weighed on the market.

The central bank as left the cash rate on hold at a record low of 2% for the tenth straight month. RBA Board members appear to be more upbeat on the outlook for the local economy.

Ratings agency Standard & Poor's has cut the credit ratings of BHP Billiton and BHP Billiton plc from A+ to A.

 

US sharemarkets fell in the morning session on Monday, recovered in afternoon trade but then eased again at the close. Energy producers fell in response to another slump in oil prices with Exxon Mobil down 2%. Economic data was also generally soft, restraining investor sentiment. At the close of trade the Dow Jones was lower by 17 points or 0.1% with the S&P 500 down less than 0.1%. However the Nasdaq finished up by 6 points or 0.1%.
