US sharemarkets ended mixed. Shares in Applied Materials rose 7%, boosting the tech sector, after the chipmaker lifted its revenue and profit forecast. But shares in Nordstrom fell by 6.7% after the department store's profit fell short of forecast. The Dow Jones fell by 21 points or 0.1%, the S&P 500 index ended flat while the Nasdaq lifted almost 17 points or 0.4%. Over the week the Dow Jones rose by 2.6% with the S&P 500 up 2.8% and the Nasdaq gained 3.8%.

¾ According to the Commonwealth Bank Business Sales Indicator (BSI), growth in economy-wide spending grew by 0.3 per cent in trend terms in January – in line with the decade average.
¾ The modest lift in the BSI is January compares with trend growth of 0.4 per cent in December and growth of 0.5 per cent in November. The annual trend growth moderated from 7.3 per cent to 7.1 per cent in January although this remains well above the decade-average of 4.8 per cent.
