The ASX 200 has closed up 0.10%, helped by a late recovery in the financial sector. Energy stocks were the worst performers, while healthcare stocks rallied.

The ASX 200 is trading a touch higher on Wednesday with the financial sector only just treading water.  Gains in the materials sector are supporting supporting the market. While energy stocks are losing ground.

US sharemarkets reversed early losses to post solid gains in Tuesday's session. Technology shares led the advance but banks fell. The Dow Jones ended higher by 98 points or 0.6% after being down 101 points. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.9% while the Nasdaq gained 80 points or 1.7%.

US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen has played down chances on an April rate hike: "...developments abroad imply that meeting our objectives for employment and inflation will likely require a somewhat lower path for the federal funds rate than was anticipated in December. Given the risks to the outlook, I consider it appropriate for the Committee to proceed cautiously in adjusting policy ."

European sharemarkets were generally closed for Easter holidays on Monday. On Thursday the FTSEurofirst 300 index fell by 1.5% with the German Dax down 1.7% and the UK FTSE lower by 1.5%.

 

* US sharemarkets ended mixed in thin trade on Monday. Traders await a speech by the US Federal Reserve chair, Janet Yellen, on Tuesday and employment data on Friday. After trading up by 68 points at one stage and trading lower by 22 points in early trade, the Dow Jones ended higher by 20 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell by 7 points or 0.1%.

The financial sector dropped 2.5% on Thursday after ANZ warned its bad & doubtful debt provisions will likely be $100mn more than previously flagged over the first half.

A 2% fall in the financial sector is hurting the market today, with the ASX 200 slipping 1.1%. The materials sector is also a drag, down 2.1%.

US sharemarkets fell on Wednesday, dragged lower by weakness in material stocks. Eight of the 10 major S&P sectors were weaker. The 4% slide in crude oil prices resulted in the S&P energy sector leading the declines, down 2.1%. Nike shares fell 3.5% after reporting weaker than expected quarterly revenue. The Dow Jones ended lower by 80 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.6% while the Nasdaq fell by 53 points or 1.1%.
