US shares recovered from early losses to end flat. The European Central Bank chief's comments that last night's stimulus might be as far as it goes pushed equities lower. Australian shares set for a quiet start.

US markets are fading following comments by the head of the European Central Bank that last night's stimulus and further rate cuts might be it from a stimulus standpoint. Shares in Europe fell by 1.5%.

The ASX has ended a choppy session down 7 points or 0.1%. Weakness in the financial and materials sector outweighed gains in the energy and telco sectors.

US and European shares posted modest gains overnight. Commodity prices rose helped by talk of further stimulus from the ECB ahead of the policy setting meeting on Thursday.

A late rally has seen the ASX 200 finish up 49 points or 1.0% with gains in the financial and telco sectors outweighing losses in mining & energy stocks.
