A rise in commodity prices is helping energy and mining stocks climb higher on Wednesday. The ASX 200 is up 0.5% to 5,380.

US sharemarkets rallied on Tuesday with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones closing at record highs. Alcoa shares rose by 5.2% after reporting better-than-expected earnings after the close of the prior session. The S&P material sector rose +1.8% while the energy sector rose by 2.2%. The Dow Jones index rose by 121 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.7% while the Nasdaq rose by 34 points or 0.7%.

European shares rose for a fourth straight session on Tuesday. Italian bank stocks outperformed on expectations a deal could be reached with the European Central Bank to tackle their bad debts. The STOXX Europe 600 Banking index rose by 1.1% helped by the surge in Italian bank UniCredit (+13.5%). The auto industry rose 3.8% after carmaker Daimler (+4.4%) reported second quarter results that beat expectations. The FTSEurofirst 300 index rose by 1.1%, the German Dax rose 1.3%, while the UK FTSE was virtually flat, down just 2 points. In London trade, shares in BHP Billiton rose 1.1% while Rio Tinto rose 1.7%.

The ASX 200 has finished the session up 0.3% - off the highs of the day. Buying in the Materials and Financial sectors helped to lift the market, outweighing losses in the energy and consumer staples sectors.

The local share market is up 0.8%, helped by a positive lead from Wall Street where the S&P 500 index hit a record closing high.

European shares rallied for the third consecutive session on Monday on the back of reduced political uncertainty in Britain. Theresa May will now succeed David Cameron as Prime Minister after her rival Andrea Leadsom pulled out. Cameron confirmed he would resign on Wednesday and avoid a leadership vacuum over the next couple of months. The prospects of further stimulus from the Bank of England later this week supported markets. British home builders recorded strong gains while European steelmakers also rallied on signs of consolidation in the sector. The FTSEurofirst 300 index rose by 1.5%, the German Dax rose 2.1%, while the UK FTSE rose by 1.4%. In London trade, shares in BHP Billiton rose 3.2% while Rio Tinto rose 3.3%.

 

* US sharemarkets rallied on Monday with the S&P closing at a record high, as investors continued to react to last week's employment report. Gains were broad-based with seven of the major 10 S&P sectors higher. The S&P industrial and consumer staples sectors hit record highs. Investors waited on Alcoa which reported after the close. The Alcoa result beat expectations although second quarter revenue was down 10%. The Dow Jones index rose by 80 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.3% while the Nasdaq rose by almost 32 points or 0.6%.

The local share market has surged 2%, with every sector rallying. The Materials and Financial sectors were the biggest winners, each jumping more than 2.5%.

US sharemarkets rose on Friday with the S&P 500 briefly trading above its record closing high. The strength in employment data proved a catalyst for investors. The S&P Material (+2.5%) and Industrial (+1.9%) sectors recorded the largest gains on the back of hopes of a stronger economic recovery. The S&P Financial sector rose 1.8%, with Wells Fargo (+2.1%) and JP Morgan (+2.1%). The Dow Jones index rose by almost 251 points or 1.4%. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.5% while the Nasdaq rose by 80 points or 1.6%. For the week the Dow Jones rose 1.1%, the S&P 500 gained 1.3% and the Nasdaq rose 1.9%.
