US sharemarkets posted solid gains on Thursday. Investors noted that the chances of an interest rate hike next week eased from 15% to 12% after the release of new economic data. Shares in Apple rose by 3.4% on reports that the new iPhone 7 Plus had sold out. The Dow Jones index ended firmer by 178 points or 1.0% after being up 235 points at one stage. The S&P500 index rose by 1.0% and the Nasdaq rose by 76 points or 1.5%.

The ASX 200 has finished the session up 0.2% recovering some earlier losses. Gains in the Materials and Financial sectors boosted the market, while energy and utilities stocks were the laggards.

Employment fell by 3,900 in August after rising by 26,200 people in July. Full-time jobs rose by 11,500 while part-time jobs fell by 15,400. Economists had tipped a 15,000 increase in jobs. The jobless rate eased from 5.7% to 5.6%.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Wednesday. Energy stocks fell in line with a near 3% fall in the oil price. But company-specific news mainly drove sharemarket indexes. Shares in Monsanto rose by 0.6% after agreeing to be bought by Bayer. And shares in Apple rose by 3.6% on reports of strong demand for new devices. The Dow Jones index ended lower by 32 points or 0.2% after swinging through a 171 point range. The S&P500 index fell by 0.1% but the Nasdaq rose by 18.5 points or 0.4%.
