US sharemarkets ended flat on Wednesday. Shares in Apple rose by 0.6% after it unveiled the new iPhone 7 and an updated Apple Watch. After being down 63 points at one stage, the Dow Jones index ended lower by 12 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index fell by less than 0.1% but the Nasdaq gained 8 points or 0.2% to a record high.

The Australian economy has just completed 25 consecutive years of growth. The economy grew by 0.5 per cent in the June quarter with annual growth lifting from 3.0 per cent to 3.3 per cent - the fasted growth rate in four years.

US sharemarkets posted modest gains on Tuesday. While economic data was weaker-than-expected, takeover activity served to boost investor sentiment. Molecular diagnostics company Cepheid agreed to be bought by Danaher for $4 billion. In the energy sector, focus was on Enbridge's acquisition of Spectra Energy for about $28 billion. The Dow Jones index rose by 46 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index also rose by 0.3% and the Nasdaq gained 26 points or 0.5%.
