The local share market is down 0.7% following a negative lead from Wall Street overnight. Big falls in the energy and materials sectors are weighing on the market.

US sharemarkets fell on Tuesday. A stronger US dollar weighed on exporters, the materials sector and globally-dependent stocks. Oil prices fell, weighing on the energy sector. And the healthcare sector fell by 2.6%. Shares in Alcoa slumped by 11.4% after the aluminium giant reported quarterly revenue and profit that missed expectations. After being down 267 points, the Dow Jones index ended lower by 200 points or 1.1% with the S&P 500 index lower by 1.2% while the Nasdaq lost 82 points or 1.5%.

US sharemarkets rose on Monday. All of the 11 major S&P 500 indexes were higher, led by a 1.5 percent rise in the energy sector, the latter lifted by a higher oil price. Shares in drugmaker Mylan rose by 8.2% after it said it would pay $465 million to settle questions of whether it underpaid government healthcare programs by misclassifying its EpiPen emergency allergy treatment. The Dow Jones index rose by 89 points or 0.5% with the S&P 500 index higher by 0.5% while the Nasdaq gained 36 points or 0.7%.
