US sharemarkets rallied for the first time in three sessions on Wednesday. The surprisingly large expansion in the services sector and lift in oil prices supported equities. The S&P energy sector lifted by 1.4% with Exxon Mobile gaining 0.8%, while Chevron rose by 1.2%. The financial sector recorded healthy gains with the S&P financial sector lifting by 1.5%. Twitter rose by 4.4% after a Wall St Journal report that the company would be fielding takeover bids this week. The Dow Jones index rose by 113 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index was higher by 0.4% while the Nasdaq gained 26 points or 0.5%.

The ASX 200 is trading at the lows of the day, down 0.7% amid concerns of looming US rate hikes. Mining and Utilities are suffering the biggest losses, with gold miners in particular under pressure after a sharp drop in the gold price.

The central bank has left the cash rate on hold in October at a record low of 1.5%. The central bank has maintained its neutral stance, barely changing the wording in its statement.

US sharemarkets fell on Monday, led lower by financial and technology stocks. Tesla shares rose 4.7% after the electric carmaker said third-quarter deliveries rose by 70% to 24,500 cars. Investors positioned at the start of a new week, month and quarter. Traders also await key employment data on Friday. The Dow Jones index fell by 54 points or 0.3% after being down 104 points. The S&P 500 index was lower by 0.3% while the Nasdaq lost 11 points or 0.2%.

Local shares hit their best levels in five weeks although volume was light due to a number of state holidays and the closure of China's market this week. Banks did much of the heavy lifting while energy stocks were the best improvers.
