The market helped by another strong lift in the gold price and buying in property stocks. The ASX 200 (Aussie Market) will close 2hours early at 2:10PM AEDT

US sharemarkets were lower on Thursday but well off the day's lows. Some investors were keen to book profits after solid gains recorded in the month and quarter

End of Quarter and Year book squaring impacting the US markets again overnight, while the weaker USD helped lift the gold price and the AUD.

Despite trading in the red for most of the day, local shares recovered in the final hour of trade to close at fresh 16-month highs. Property trusts trading ex-distribution held the market back most while stronger banks lifted equities.

A large number of companies trading ex-dividend and ex-distribution on Thursday are holding the market back most at lunch. There is no major economic news due today and the dollar remains near a seven-month low.

The Santa rally continues, with Aussie shares hitting 16-month highs with just two sessions remaining in 2016. Mining stocks fared best.
