US sharemarkets rose again on Friday to fresh record highs. The gains were broad-based. The S&P Consumer staples sector rose 1.4%, supported by the 2.5% lift in Coca-Cola shares after the announcement of a new CEO. The S&P Healthcare sector gained 1.1%. The Dow Jones index closed up by 142 points or 0.7% to record highs. The S&P 500 index was up by 0.6% to record highs while the Nasdaq gained 27 points or 0.5%, also at record highs. For the week the Dow Jones and S&P500 both rose 3.1%, while the Nasdaq gained 3.6%.

The Australian markets rose for the fourth straight day, took the gains this week to 2% and hit the best levels in four months in the process. Should local shares rise by another 1% next week, the ASX 200 will hit a 16-month high.

The Australian market is improving for the fourth day and is only 1% below 16 month highs. Crown (CWN) is down 6% on reports of ATM withdrawal limits in Macau. Banks helping lift the market most.

Another big week of economic events is in prospect in Australia and overseas. In Australia the focus will be on the labour market. In China, the broader economic activity indicators are released. In the US, no doubt most interest will be on the US Federal Reserve interest rate decision.

US sharemarkets rose again on Thursday with a number of key indexes hitting fresh record highs. Seven of the 11 S&P 500 sectors rose, led by technology and banks. The Dow Jones index was up by 65 points or 0.3% to record highs after being up 115 points at one stage. The S&P 500 index was up by 0.2% to record highs while the Nasdaq gained almost 24 points or 0.4%.

The ASX 200 posted its best 1 day gain in a fortnight led by banks and miners. Banks were underpinned by the notion that interest rates will remain lower for longer after yesterdays weak growth data. Miners rose on firmer iron ore prices.

US sharemarkets posted solid gains on Thursday in line with Europe. Nine of the 11 S&P 500 sectors rose led by real estate. But healthcare and pharmaceuticals fell after President-elect Donald Trump vowed to bring down drug prices. The Dow Jones index was up by 298 points or 1.6% to record highs with the S&P 500 index up by 1.3% to record highs while the Nasdaq gained almost 61 points or 1.1%
