NSW has solidly held the position as the best performing economy, while the ACT has moved into second spot, improving its relative position on five of the eight indicators. Victoria slips to third, ahead of Tasmania, Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The ASX 200 has closed up 0.6% on Friday boosted by the financial and materials sectors. Over the week though, the benchmark index slipped 0.5%.

US sharemarkets rallied on Thursday with the Nasdaq closing at a record high. Better-than-expected earnings results supported sentiment. American express rose 5.9% and was the biggest mover on the Dow Jones, after reporting a smaller-than-expected drop in quarterly profit. According to Thomson Reuters data, of the 82 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings 75% have beat expectations, above the 71% average of the last 4 quarters. The Dow Jones index rose by 174 points or 0.9%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.8% while the Nasdaq gained almost 54 points or 0.9%.

US sharemarkets were mostly weaker on Wednesday, although the tech heavy Nasdaq managed to post modest gains. The drop in oil prices weighed on the energy sector which lost 1.4%. IBM fell by 4.9% after reporting a decline in revenue. Morgan Stanley rose 2% after posting a surge in quarterly profit. According to Thomson Reuters data, of the 57 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings 75.4% have beat expectations. The Dow Jones index fell by almost 119 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.2% while the Nasdaq gained almost 14 points or 0.2%.

Economy-wide spending rose by 0.6% in trend terms in March – the strongest growth in 15 months. Growth had averaged just 0.2% over the prior 5 months.
- Across sectors, 17 of the 19 industry sectors rose in trend terms in March. The biggest drop in sales occurred at Business Services (down 0.7 per cent) and Retail Stores (down 0.3 per cent).
