US sharemarkets were modestly higher on Tuesday, in a volatile trading session. Investors waited on Apple's result after the close and also the FOMC rate decision due out on Wednesday. Energy shares were weaker on the back of the oil price. The S&P Energy sector lost 0.8%. In earnings news Coach shares rose 11.5% as the handbag maker cut back on discounting in the US and sold more expensive handbags. The Dow Jones rose by 36 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% while the Nasdaq lifted by almost 4 points or 0.1%.

The local share market has broken a seven session rally, held down by the banks after ANZ’s 1H result slightly misses expectations. The ASX 200 slipped 0.1% to 5,950.

US sharemarkets ended mixed on Monday with the Dow Jones easing in late trade while technology stocks rose. Financials also rose despite US President Trump saying that he was considering breaking up the big banks. Economic data was soft but there are expectations that earnings results later in the week will continue the positive trend of the past fortnight. The Dow Jones fell by 27 points or 0.1% after trading in a 78-point range. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2% while the Nasdaq lifted by 44 points or 0.7%.
