US sharemarkets ended mixed on Wednesday as investors digested the surprise move by President Trump to fire his FBI director Comey. The FBI director had been leading an investigation into whether Trump's 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia. Eight of the 11 major S&P sectors rose led by energy. The lift in the oil price resulted in the S&P energy sector gaining 1.1%. The Dow Jones fell by 33 points or 0.2%, the S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% while the Nasdaq lifted by 9 points or 0.1% to record highs.

The local share market has finished up 0.6%, recovering all of yesterday’s 0.5% loss. The market was helped by a recovery in the financial sector, and gains from mining & consumer related stocks.

US sharemarkets ended mixed on Tuesday. Four of the 11 major S&P sectors rose led by consumer discretionary. But utilities and telecom were lower. The Dow Jones fell by 36 points or 0.2%, the S&P 500 index fell by 0.1% while the Nasdaq lifted by 18 points or 0.3% to record highs.
The Federal Budget deficit is tipped to fall to $29.4 billion over 2017/18 and to return to surplus in four years time. The budget contains increased spending on health and infrastructure but also imposes a levy on banks and proposes a lift in the Medicare levy in 2019. Moody's says the budget supports the Aaa rating.
