US sharemarkets posted solid gains on Wednesday. Shares in banks rose ahead of stress test results to be released by the Federal Reserve after the end of trade. Shares in office goods retailer Staples rose 8.5% on takeover speculation. Shares in cereal maker General Mills rose by 1.6% after reporting a better-than-expected profit. The Dow Jones rose by 144 points or 0.7% with the S&P 500 up by 0.9% while the Nasdaq gained almost 88 points or 1.4%

US sharemarkets fell on Tuesday with tech stocks leading the declines. A delay in the healthcare bill vote raised questions about the ability of President Trump to advance his domestic agenda. Shares in Google lost 2.5% after European regulators fined the company US$2.7 billion for reportedly abusing its dominant market position in promoting its own comparison shopping service. The Dow Jones fell by almost 99 points or 0.5% with the S&P 500 down by 0.8% and the Nasdaq lower by 100.5 points or 1.6%.
