US sharemarkets were marginally higher in a volatile trading session on Thursday. The testimony of former FBI director James Comey to the Senate intelligence committee contained no surprises. Investors shifted back to the Trump "reflation trade" with sectors linked to infrastructure spending getting a boost. The S&P 500 financial sector rose by 1.1%. The S&P construction and engineering index rose 1.4%. Alibaba shares rose by 13.3% after the company said it expects revenue growth of 45%-49% in the 2018 fiscal year. The Dow Jones ended higher by almost 9 points after being up as much as 90 points in early trade. The S&P 500 index was largely flat while the Nasdaq rose by 24 points or 0.4%.

The local share market is retreating for a fourth straight session, as investors remain cautious ahead of the UK election. The ASX 200 is down 4 points or 0.1% to 5,663.

US sharemarkets US Close 8 June 17: US markets rebounded ahead of the Comey's testimony and UK election outcomerebounded in late afternoon trade after former FBI director James Comey released written testimony ahead of his appearance in front of a Senate intelligence committee. The written testimony contained no new details of Comey's claim of alleged interference by the US President in a FBI investigation. But the energy sector was lower in response to a slump in oil prices. After being down 23 points, the Dow Jones ended higher by 37 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2% while the Nasdaq rose by 22 points or 0.4%.

The economy grew by 0.3% in the March quarter - in line with market expectations. Annual economic growth eased from 2.4% to 1.7%. The outlook is encouraging with strong infrastructure spending & demand for our exports to support growth.

US sharemarkets ended lower on Tuesday. Investors are wary about a raft of economic and political events over the next few days. So safe-haven assets such as government bonds and gold were favoured over equities. The Dow Jones fell by 48 points or 0.2%, the S&P 500 index fell by 0.3% while the Nasdaq lost almost 21 points or 0.3%.
