The Reserve Bank has left the cash rate on hold for the 12th consecutive month in August. Board members commented on the recent rise in the Australian dollar, saying it’s "weighing on the outlook for output and employment”.

The ASX 200 is up 0.6% at mid-session, adding to yesterday’s gains. Energy stocks are surging ahead, while Navitas has dropped about 10% on a disappointing profit result.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Monday. The ongoing strength in Boeing shares continued to lift the Dow Jones but selling in Facebook and Alphabet weighed on the technology sector. Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors were higher, with the financial sector rising by 0.6%. Snap shares fell by 2.5% as some investors were allowed to sell shares for the first time since the IPO. The Dow Jones rose by almost 61 points or 0.3% to a record high. But the S&P 500 lost 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell by 27 points or 0.4%. Over the month the Dow rose by 2.5%, the S&P 500 rose 1.9% and the Nasdaq rose by 3.4%.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Friday. Blue-chip shares rose but technology shares eased modestly. Shares in Amazon lost 2.5% in response to its earnings result. Amongst other large decliners on the day were Altria (-9.5%), Mattel (-7.8%) and Starbucks (-9.2%). The Dow Jones rose by almost 34 points or 0.2% to a record high. But the S&P 500 lost 0.1% while the Nasdaq fell by 7.5 points or 0.1%. Over the week the Dow rose by 1.2%, the S&P 500 was flat and the Nasdaq fell 0.2%.
