US sharemarkets finished mixed on Monday. Retailers recorded the largest declines together with healthcare, offset by gains in the technology sector. Investors braced for the start of earnings season. JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Citigroup will report on Friday. Federal Reserve chair Janel Yellen will also testify on the economy on Wednesday and Thursday. The Dow Jones fell by almost 6 points or less than 0.1% after holding in a 75-point range. But the S&P 500 was up by 0.1% and the Nasdaq gained 23 points or 0.4%.

Australian shares finished the day a little higher while fading from their best levels of the day. The ASX 200 rose by 0.4% and was supported most by banks.While the banks gained as much as 0.9 per cent, mining stocks were the main drags. The single biggest weight was BHP spin-off, South32 (S32) which fell by 3.2 per cent on news one of its NSW coal mines will remain closed for an ‘extended’ period while a safety review is carried out.

Better than expected US jobs data has helped local shares move ahead on Monday. Most ASX sectors were higher with the exception of Materials and Real Estate. Banks were the foundation for the gains

US sharemarkets posted firm gains on Friday. Better-than-expected job gains gave investors confidence about the state of the economy. The Dow Jones rose by 94 points or 0.4% with the S&P 500 up by 0.6% and the Nasdaq gained 64 points or 1.0%. Over the week the Dow rose 0.3%, the S&P 500 rose 0.1% and the Nasdaq rose by 0.2%.

The local share market managed to stage a late recovery, however it wasn’t enough to see the index close in positive territory. The ASX 200 ended the session down 4 points or 0.1% to 5,758 - weighed down by losses from banking, energy & telco stocks.
