Weak Chinese economic data weighed on technology shares. But Apple shares climbed 1.4% to an all-time high. Tesla shares sank 4.3% as the US government opened an investigation on the electric vehicles firm's Autopilot system. Shares of JPMorgan Chase (-0.7%) and Goldman Sachs (-0.6%) dropped as bond yields fell. Walmart shares gained 0.8% ahead of its quarterly report. Shares of UnitedHealth lifted 1.8% with Merck shares 1.6% higher as investors moved into defensive sectors. But Boeing shares lost 2.3% and Chevron shares fell 1.0% as the oil price declined. The Dow Jones index rose by 110 points or 0.3% to record highs. The S&P 500 index also lifted 0.3% to record highs. But the Nasdaq index lost 29 points or 0.2%.

The Aussie market has eased from record highs set last Friday. The ASX 200 dropped 46 points or 0.6% to 7,582 as financials and energy underperformed the market most. There were plenty of companies to release earnings results with some big reactions from the market while A2 Milk soared 12% on media reports of potential takeover interest.

Retailer of electronics and whitegoods, JB Hi-Fi (JBH) has reported a 67% increase in full year net profit after tax to $506 million and has declared a final dividend of $1.07 per share, an increase of 17 cents or 19% compared to the same time last year.

The major drag has been falls among major lenders while Bendigo & Adelaide (BEN) slides 10% on its FY21 profit result. Elsewhere, BHP is considering its options for its petroleum business while A2 Milk jumps 11%.

A lift in the value of shares in Walt Disney outweighed news of a slump in consumer sentiment. Shares in Walt Disney rose 1% on favourable reaction to its latest earnings news. The Dow Jones index rose by 15.5 points or less than 0.1% to record highs. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.2% to record highs. And the Nasdaq index gained 6.6 points or less than 0.1%. Over the week, the Dow rose by 0.9%; the S&P 500 rose by 0.7%; but the Nasdaq fell by 0.1%.

The ASX 200 extended its winning run to a fourth consecutive session with a gain of 40 points or 0.54% to 7,628, hitting new all-time highs and a record close in the process. There were broad gains on Friday with the index also enjoying another weekly gain of 1.2%.

Mega-cap technology shares led gains. Salesforce (+2.5%) and Apple (+2.1%) were the best-performing stocks in the Dow Jones, while Visa (-1.3%) and American Express (-1.3%) dragged on the index. Shares of Moderna (+1.6%), Tesla (+2.0%) and Nvidia (+1.1%) all climbed. But Micron Technology shares dropped 6.4% after Morgan Stanley's downgrade to "equal-weight." The Dow Jones index rose by 15 points or less than 0.1% to record highs. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.3% to record highs. And the Nasdaq index gained 51 points or 0.4%.
