Regulatory fears surrounding China's technology sector weighed on investor sentiment. Shares of Amazon (-2.0%) and Facebook (-1.3%) both fell. Apple (-1.5%) and Microsoft (-0.9%) shares tumbled ahead of their earnings reports. Shares of Tesla fell by 2.0%, while General Electric rose by 1.2% after both reported results that beat analysts' estimates. UPS shares lost 7.0% as its revenue disappointed. Intel shares sank 2.1% after it said its factories would start building Qualcomm (-1.8%) chips. The Dow Jones index fell by 86 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.5% and the Nasdaq index shed 180 points or 1.2%.

US sharemarkets rose modestly on Monday to fresh record highs ahead of the release of key earnings results and the Federal Reserve monetary policy decision. But a fall in new home sales weighed on home builders. US-listed Chinese shares fell after Beijing last week announced new rules on private tutoring and online education firms. Shares in E-commerce company Alibaba Group fell by 7.2% and search engine Baidu Inc fell by 6.0%. The Dow Jones lifted by 83 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2%. And the Nasdaq gained 4 points or less than 0.1%.

Sentiment was boosted by upbeat earnings. After posting earnings, shares in American Express rose 1.3%, Twitter rose 3% while Snapchat gained 23.8%. But shares in Intel fell 5.3%. The Dow Jones lifted by 238 points or 0.7%, closing above 35,000 points for the first time. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.0%. And the Nasdaq gained 152 points or 1.0%. Over the week the Dow rose by 1.1%; the S&P 500 index lifted 2.0%; and the Nasdaq gained 2.8%.
