The Australian sharemarket is lifting slightly on Monday thanks mainly to surging Sydney Airport shares, which are jumping after receiving a $22bn takeover offer from a consortium. Miners, banks, retailers and telcos are mostly lower.

Mixed US labour force data supported the US central bank's accommodative policy stance. Shares of Microsoft (+2.2%) and Apple (+2.0%) boosted the S&P 500 index. But Boeing (-1.3%) weighed on the Dow Jones index after a 737 cargo plane made an emergency landing near Hawaii. The Dow Jones index rose by 153 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index climbed 0.8% and the Nasdaq index was up by 117 points or 0.8%. All three indices closed at record highs. For the week, the Dow added 1.0%, the S&P 500 rose 1.7% and the Nasdaq gained 1.9%.

The Aussie market managed to lift by 0.6%, which was enough to recoup most of Thursday's declines thanks to gains across most sectors. While the market finished flat this week, it follows the longest monthly winning streak in 14 years and best financial year in 34 years.

The ASX 200 is rebounding at lunch on Friday from yesterday’s declines but is still on track for a second successive weekly fall. The energy sector is a standout so far today on a rally in oil prices while BNPL and mining stocks are weaker.

Data generally encouraged investors with jobless claims falling to the lowest level since the pandemic-led lockdowns. But the prices paid component of the ISM survey was the highest since records began in 1979. The energy sector rose 1.7%, leading sector gains. The Dow Jones index rose by 131 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.5% to yet another record high. And the Nasdaq index rose by 18 points or 0.1%.
