With 45 minutes to go to end of US trade the Dow Jones was down 50 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 was flat and the Nasdaq was higher by around 70 points or 0.6%. The Aussie dollar is US69 cents. The Australian sharemarket is expected to lift 28 points or 0.4% at the start of trade.

The Australian sharemarket had its second largest decline of the year so far, with the ASX 200 sliding by 1.06% and hitting a 4-week low in the process. While there was an even split between winners and losers on the broader market, heavy declines from the major banks weighed heavily on the ASX 200.

Iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has reported a 15% fall in first half profit reflecting higher costs and moderating iron ore prices, which were balanced by record shipments for the period. While the dividend was broadly in line with expectations, the dividend payout ratio slipped to 65% of earnings compared to 70% in the same period last year.

US sharemarkets advanced on Monday after a New York Federal Reserve consumer survey showed inflation expectations were little changed in January. Microsoft shares gained 2.7% following a price target increase by broker Stifel due to the tech giant's integration with ChatGPT. Meta Platforms shares added 3% on reports that the company was preparing to announce a fresh round of job cuts. Ford Motor (+2.8%) said it will collaborate with a Chinese supplier on a new US$3.5 billion battery plant for electric vehicles in Michigan. Shares of Fidelity National Information Services plunged 13.6% following its decision to spin-off its merchant payments business. With around an hour left of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 284 points or 0.8%. The S&P 500 index rose 0.9% and the Nasdaq index added 135 points or 1.2%.
