Total household wealth rose 4.3% in the March quarter to reach a new record of $12,664.5 billion. Over the last year, factors like record low interest rates and a strong recovery in the job market have helped push the value of shares and property higher. As a result, household wealth has risen by 15.3% in the last year – the strongest growth since 2010. Wealth per person rose to a new record high of $492,055.

The Aussie market has continued its inconsistent week with the ASX 200 easing after yesterday’s big rally. Sentiment was dented by new restrictions in greater Sydney as the COVID cluster grows. Travel stocks were among decliners as were the major banks and healthcare names.

The Nasdaq index hit an all-time high with Microsoft's (+1.1%) valuation at US$2 trillion for the first time. Amazon (+1.5%) saw US$5.6 billion in online sales on the first day of its Prime promotional event. Netflix shares gained 2.4%. GameStop shares jumped 10% after the videogame retailer said it raised US$1 billion in share sales. The Dow Jones index rose by 69 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq index climbed 112 points or 0.8%.

It was a far more positive day for the Aussie market on Tuesday with the ASX 200 recouping a majority of Monday’s falls. The index rallied 107pts or 1.5% to 7,342 as investors continue to digest comments from US Federal Reserve officials on future interest rates moves. Banks, miners & energy stocks were among the big winners.
