Investors were encouraged by a fall in the number of people claiming unemployment benefits in the past week. In response to the upgrade in production targets by Airbus, shares in Boeing rose by 3.9% with shares in General Electric up by 7.1%. The Dow Jones index rose by 142 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index fell by just 2 points or less than 0.1%.

Comments from US Federal Reserve officials helped damp down concerns about runaway inflation and kept bond yields in check. Technology shares lifted with Tesla (+2.4%) leading gains. Amazon (+0.2%) announced plans to buy MGM Studios for US$8.45 billion. Shares of Ford rose 8.5% after the automobile giant said it is increasing its investment in electric vehicles. Department store Nordstrom shares dropped 5.8% after reporting a quarterly loss. The Dow Jones index rose by 11 points or less than 0.1%. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.2% and the Nasdaq index gained 81 points or 0.6%.

The ASX 200 is firmer at lunch having overcome a soft start. Local shares followed Wall Street lower early on but has since been supported by gains for technology and banks in particular. Commonwealth Bank (CBA) has topped $100/share for the first time ever.

A gauge of new US home sales slid by more than forecast as higher prices restrained demand. But US Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida said price pressures would "prove to be transitory." Exxon Mobil shares fell 2.3% on reports BlackRock has backed several candidates of hedge fund Engine No. 1 to join the energy giant's board. Amazon shares came under pressure (+0.4%) after Washington DC Attorney General Karl Racine said he's suing the e-commerce giant on anti-trust grounds. Boeing shares rose 1.4% on 14 new orders for 737 MAX jets. The Dow Jones index fell by 81.5 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index also slid 0.2% and the Nasdaq index lost 4 points or less than 0.1%.

The ASX 200 improved for a fourth day running with a gain of 69pts or 1% to 7,115. Improvements were widespread with financials, retail & communications some of the best performers. Gold miners were some of the major losers.
