US sharemarkets were mixed on Friday. Growth-focussed sectors eased in response to higher bond yields. And shares in ride-hailing firm Lyft fell 36.4% as it cut prices to boost customer demand. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 169 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index rose 0.2% but the Nasdaq index slid by 71 points or 0.6%.

The Australian sharemarket’s 5-week winning streak has come to an end, with the ASX 200 slipping by 0.76% on Friday. New Hope (NHC), REA Group (REA), News Corp (NWS) and Domain (DHG) were among the biggest decliners.

US sharemarkets fell on Thursday. Google parent Alphabet extended a two-day sell-off, down 5.2%, as concerns surfaced about the competency of its ChatGPT rival Bard. Shares of Microsoft fell 0.5% with Amazon.com shares down 1.7%. But shares of Walt Disney rose 0.2% after the company posted smaller-than-expected subscriber losses. PepsiCo shares gained 0.7% after reporting better-than-expected results. Luxury brand Tapestry jumped 4.2% on a strong annual profit forecast. With around an hour left of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 204 points or 0.6% after being up more than 300 points earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index lost 0.6% and the Nasdaq index slid 91 points or 0.8%.

US sharemarkets were lower in late trade on Wednesday, with technology shares leading the way lower. Shares of Lumen Technologies shed 21.3% after it reported a fourth quarter loss. Chipotle Mexican Grill shares slid 4.8% after its latest results disappointed. Alphabet shares were down 7.4% after its new AI chatbot Bard delivered an incorrect answer in an online advertisement. Apple (-1.6%) and Amazon.com (-1.7%) shares also fell. CVS Health shares lifted 4.4% after its US$9.5 billion cash buyout offer for Oak Street Health (+5.1%). Uber gained 5% following better-than-expected earnings. With less than an hour left of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 180 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index lost 1% and the Nasdaq index slid 186 points or 1.5%.
