Despite a firmer open, the ASX 200 is in the red around midday with broad declines led by tech, travel & big banks. Strength in miners is providing a level of support as shares fell on news of the introduction of new restrictions for greater Sydney over the next 3 days.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen clarified the comments she made the previous day on higher interest rates, saying this wasn't something that she was "predicting or recommending". Energy and materials led the gains with financials and industrials stocks. The Dow Jones index rose by 97 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.1% but the Nasdaq index fell by 51 points or 0.4%.

The Aussie sharemarket extended its winning streak to a third day, with the ASX 200 lifting by 0.39 per cent. CBA hit a six-year high, ANZ fell despite posting a larger profit and dividend while travel stocks declined following news of a locally acquired COVID-19 case in Sydney.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, “It may be that interest rates will have to rise somewhat to make sure that our economy doesn’t overheat.” The comments exacerbated a sell-off in major technology shares with Apple (-3.5%), Tesla (-1.7%) and Amazon (-2.2%) all lower on valuation concerns. Pfizer shares rose by 0.3% after posting quarterly results that beat analyst expectations. Shares of CVS Health gained 4.4% after raising its 2021 profit view. Research and advisory company Gartner's shares jumped 14.2% after delivering better-than-expected first-quarter earnings. The Dow Jones index rose by 20 points or 0.1%. But the S&P 500 index lost 0.7% and the Nasdaq index dropped 262 points or 1.9%.

Aussie shares have closed higher for a second day in a row. The ASX 200 rose 39pts or 0.56% to 7,068 as energy and mining stocks outperformed. Gold miners were some of the big winners for the day. Tech was again the major laggard.

Berkshire Hathaway shares rose 1.6% after Warren Buffett’s conglomerate reported a 20% surge in earnings. Shares of Verizon rose 0.2% after the telecom giant said it will sell its media group to Apollo Global Management for US$5 billion. Moderna shares rose 4.0% after a vaccine supply deal with COVAX. Pfizer (+3.1%) will begin exporting US made doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. Gap shares rose 7.2%, but Estee Lauder (-7.9%) missed analysts' estimates for third-quarter sales. Tesla (-3.5%) and Amazon (-2.3%) dragged down the Nasdaq index. The Dow Jones index rose by 238 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index gained 0.3%, but the Nasdaq index dropped 67.5 points or 0.5%.

In what was a rather flat day to start the week and month,. the major banks were the big improvers led by Westpac (WBC), which impressed investors with its first half profit results. Technology and resources weighed most as most sectors fell for the day.
