In the US there was only one game in town on Tuesday and that was a speech by Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell.
But investors absorbed the latest comments and with 45 minutes of trade to go the Dow Jones was up 100 points or 0.3% with the S&P 500 up 0.7% and Nasdaq up 1.1%. The futures suggests the Australian sharemarket will rise 13 points or 0.2% at the start of trade

The Australian sharemarket fell by ~0.5% on Tuesday after the Reserve Bank raised rates for a 9th straight meeting and signalled more to come.

The Australian sharemarket eased by 0.25%, ending a 3-day winning streak as markets await the Reserve Bank’s decision on interest rates tomorrow. Newcrest Mining (NCM) rose most after receiving a A$24bn takeover offer from US based Newmont.

The Australian sharemarket looks set to hit fresh 9-month highs on Monday despite a poor finish to the week on Wall Street.
US shares were weighed down by the poor performance of megacap technology shares and soaring US government bond yields.
According to the latest SPI futures, the ASX 200 index is expected to open the day 12 points or 0.2% higher this morning, potentially building on five straight weeks of gains.
Aussie energy shares could be under pressure today with the US crude oil price slipping over 3% in Friday trade.
The Aussie dollar eased from around US70.70 cents to US69.15 cents following a hot US jobs report.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Thursday. Facebook parent Meta Platform's shares soared 24% - the most since 2013 - after reporting a fourth quarter beat on revenue and announcing a US$40 billion share buyback. Shares of Google parent Alphabet, Amazon.com and Apple rose by up to 5.8% ahead of their quarterly results. But shares of drugmaker Merck slid 3.5% on a lower-than-expected annual forecast. Around an hour before the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down 252 points or 0.7%. But the S&P 500 index gained 0.7% and the Nasdaq index added 247 points or 2.1%.
