Investors digested inflation data ahead of the release of big US bank earnings results on Wednesday. US consumer prices rose by the most in more than 8 years in March. The Dow Jones index fell after the US Food and Drug Administration recommended pausing Johnson & Johnson's (-1.3%) Covid-19 vaccines after reported cases of blood clotting. Shares of rival Moderna (+7.4%) jumped. American Airlines (-1.5%) and Avis Budget (-1.0%) shares both fell. But Apple (+2.4%), Microsoft (+1.0%), Paypal (+2.4%) and Tesla (+8.6%) shares all climbed. The Dow Jones index closed down by 68 points or 0.2%, but the S&P 500 index rose by 0.3% to a record closing high. And the Nasdaq index added 146 points or 1.1%.

US sharemarkets eased ahead of the release of first-quarter earnings and widely-anticipated inflation data. Intel shares dipped 4.2% after Nvidia (+5.6%) said it will offer the company’s first server microprocessors. United Airlines shares dropped 3.9% after the carrier said its first-quarter revenue is expected to fall 66% compared with the same period in 2019. Boeing shares lost 1.1%. But shares of Nuance Communications surged 16.0% after Microsoft said it would buy the artificial intelligence company in a US$19.7 billion deal. The Dow Jones index closed down by 55 points or 0.2%, the S&P 500 index fell less than 0.1% and the Nasdaq index lost 50 points or 0.4%.

The Aussie market has fallen to start the week as it extends its losing run to a second successive session. The ASX 200 dropped 21 points or 0.3% to 6,974 as miners and property underperformed most. It will be a big week on global markets with US quarterly earnings kicking off this week.

Investors shrugged off concerns about inflation ahead of the first-quarter earnings season this week. Honeywell shares lifted 3.2% as Jefferies and JPMorgan raised their price targets on the aero parts maker. General Electric shares climbed 1.1%. JPMorgan shares added 0.8%. Upgrades from Credit Suisse and Argus boosted Carnival's shares by 2.6%. Amazon shares rose 2.2% as warehouse workers in Alabama rejected an attempt to form a union. The Dow Jones index closed up by 297 points or 0.9% and the S&P 500 index gained 0.8% -both closing at record highs. And the Nasdaq rose by 71 points or 0.5%. Over the week, the Dow Jones index lifted 2.0%, while the S&P 500 index gained 2.7% -its third-straight weekly gain. And the Nasdaq index rallied 3.1%.
