There was optimism over the vaccine rollout, while investors rebalanced their portfolio's ahead of quarter-end. Energy stocks jumped 2.6% as crude oil prices rebounded. Bank shares gained 1.9% after the US Federal Reserve announced that banks could resume buybacks and raise dividends from June. The Dow Jones index rose by 453 points or 1.4%. The S&P 500 index lifted 1.7%, hitting a record closing high. And the Nasdaq index gained 161 points or 1.2%. For the week, the S&P 500 rose 1.6% and the Dow lifted 1.4%, but the Nasdaq slipped 0.6%.

Claims for unemployment benefits dropped to a one-year low and US President Joe Biden announced a new goal of administering 200 million Covid-19 vaccine doses in his first 100 days in office. Plans to resume the delivery of its 787 Dreamliners boosted Boeing (+3.3%) shares. Darden Restaurants shares jumped 8.2% after it announced a share buyback plan. Tesla (+1.6%) and Apple (+0.4%) shares lifted. But shares of Nike fell 3.4% on concerns it risked a boycott in China. The Dow Jones index rose by 199 points or 0.6% after being down 348 points. The S&P 500 index lifted 0.5% and the Nasdaq index gained 16 points or 0.1%.

Investors responded to the positive testimony by the US Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to the Senate Banking Committee. But while financials, industrials and energy rose, technology shares eased. Shares in Intel fell 2.3% on news that it plans to spend as much as $20 billion to build two factories in Arizona. Shares in Apple fell 2.0% with Facebook down 2.9%. The Dow Jones index fell by 3 points or less than 0.1% after being up 364 points earlier. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.6%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 266 points or 2.0%.
