US sharemarkets rebounded during Wednesday's trading session as investors shook-off a quarter-point rate hike from the US Federal Reserve. The tech-heavy Nasdaq index was boosted by gains in chipmakers after strong Advanced Micro Devices earnings. The chipmaker's shares rose 12.7%. Shares of fitness equipment company Peloton surged 24.8% after it narrowed its net losses from a year earlier. With around an hour left of trade, the Dow Jones index was up 86 points or 0.3% after being down more than 500 points at the session's lows. The S&P 500 index rose 1.2%. And the Nasdaq index added 246 points or 2.1%.

US sharemarkets fell on Monday, dragged lower by declines in technology shares, as investors looked toward the US central bank's interest rate decision and earnings from big tech companies. With around an hour left of trade, the Dow Jones index was down 260 points or 0.8%. The S&P 500 index shed 1.1%. And the Nasdaq index dipped 220 points or 1.9%.

The Australian sharemarket finished a touch lower on Monday, however this follows the ASX 200 hitting a 9-month high on Friday while remaining on track to have its best start to a year in decades.

Key inflation data met expectations. Across sectors, consumer discretionary rose 2.5% with energy down 1.8%. At the close, the Dow Jones index was higher by 29 points or 0.1% after earlier being up 215 points. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.3%. And the Nasdaq index rose 109 points or 1.0%. Over the week, the Dow rose 1.8%; S&P 500 rose 2.5%; and the Nasdaq rose 4.5%.

Shares in Tesla rose 11% after better-than expected quarterly results. Shares in Chevron rose 4.8% after the oil producer said it would triple its budget for share buybacks to US$75 billion. Refinitiv reports: "So far, 126 companies in the S&P 500 have reported fourth-quarter earnings, with 69% topping consensus estimates. That compares with the average of the past four quarters of 76%. Analysts now see aggregate S&P 500 earnings dropping 2.7% year-on-year for the period." At the close, the Dow Jones index was higher by 206 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index rose by 1.1%. And the Nasdaq index rose 199 points or 1.8%.
