Woolworths (WOW) continued to show strong growth across most of its businesses over the first half of FY21 as it navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. Australian Food (supermarket) sales benefitted with 10.6% growth as people spent more time at home while Big W outshone with 20% sales growth. Not surprisingly, the Hotels segment was the major under-performer as COVID restrictions hampered trading.

The Aussie market is erasing a healthy chunk of Tuesday’s improvements, with the ASX 200 down more than 0.5 per cent at lunch. The equity market is being held back partly by profit taking from major mining stocks like BHP, Rio Tinto (RIO), Fortescue Metals (FMG) and gold producers, which all rose on Monday and Tuesday. A number of stocks trading ex-dividend are also weighing, including Telstra, Downer, AGL, Iress and Fletcher Building.

US were mixed overnight. The S&P 500 index erased a 1.8% drop after US Fed Chair Powell relieved some of the concerns about higher interest rates and inflation. The Dow Jones index closed up by 16 points or 0.1% after shedding 360 points at the low. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.1%, but the Nasdaq index lost 68 points or 0.5%.

US sharemarkets were mixed on Monday. Climbing bond yields and prospects for rising inflation triggered valuation concerns, weighing on growth technology stocks.
