US President Joe Biden warned that China was outpacing the US on infrastructure building. S&P 500 tech (+1.1%) and semi-conductors (+3.5%) stocks hit record highs, but energy (-1.5%) and industrials (-0.2%) stocks slid. Shares in MasterCard lifted 2.6% after announcing plans to offer support for some cryptocurrencies on its network this year. Shares in Bank of New York Mellon climbed 0.9% after saying it had formed a new unit to help clients hold, transfer and issue digital assets. Shares of dating app Bumble soared 63.5% after its market debut. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 7 points or less than 0.1% after hitting intraday record highs. But the S&P 500 index rose by 0.2% and the Nasdaq index was up by 53 points or 0.4% to a record closing high.

The Australian sharemarket eased by 0.1% on Thursday in choppy trade for local stocks. Newcrest Mining (NCM) and Telstra (TLS) both rose following the release of their profit results while AMP slumped by 11%.

Australia’s largest gold miner, Newcrest (NCM), posted a 98% lift in underlying profit thanks mainly to a strong lift in the realised gold price over the six months to December 2020. NCM has changed its dividend policy, flagging its intention to pay eligible investors between 30-60% of free cash flow (was 10-30%). Its shares initially rose in response to the results.

The Aussie market has been unable to add to Wednesday’s improvements with a small decline around lunch. Materials and communications are leading the improvements while the majority of sectors decline. Leading the losses are technology and industrials.

Investors digested corporate earnings results and inflation data. Shares of Twitter climbed 13.2% after reporting a jump in revenue. Lyft shares rallied 4.8% on expectations that it will turn a quarterly profit this year. Coca-Cola shares fell 0.2% despite topping Wall Street’s earnings estimates. Under Armour (+7%) reported a surprise profit result. But Amazon (-0.6%) and Apple (-0.5%) shares both fell. The Dow Jones index was up by 62 points or 0.2% to a record closing high. But the S&P 500 index fell by less than 0.1% and the Nasdaq index was down by 35 points or 0.3% -after hitting all-time highs.
