Investors digested earnings figures. There was also a technical glitch shortly after the opening bell that briefly halted trading. After releasing latest results, shares in 3M fell by 6.2%; Verizon rose by 2.0%; General Electric rose by 1.2%; and shares in Travelers rose by 3.7%. Shares in semiconductors eased in response to profit-taking. At the close of trade the Dow Jones index was higher by 104 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.1%. And the Nasdaq index lost 30 points or 0.3%.

Technology stocks - especially chipmakers - drove gains. Shares in Qualcom rose 6.6% with American Micro Devices up 9.2% on a broker upgrade. Baker Hughes fell 1.5% after missing earnings estimates. Shares in Spotify rose 2.1% after announcing a 6% cut of its global workforce. Shares in Tesla rose by 7.7% with Apple up 2.4%. The Dow Jones index finished trade higher by 254 points or 0.8% after earlier being up 407 points. The S&P 500 index lifted by 1.2%. And the Nasdaq index gained 224 points or 2.0%.

Shares in Netflix rose 8.5% in response to earnings figures. Shares in Google parent Alphabet rose 5.3% after announcing 12,000 job cuts. But shares in Goldman Sachs fell 2.5% after the Wall Street Journal reported that the Federal Reserve was probing the company's consumer business. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 331 points or 1.0%. The S&P 500 index lifted 1.9%. And the Nasdaq index gained 288 points or 2.7%. Over the week the Dow fell 2.7%; the S&P 500 lost 0.7%; but the Nasdaq rose by 0.6%.

Data pointing to a tight US labour market fuelled concerns that the US Federal Reserve will maintain its aggressive path of rate hikes. American Express, the only major US card company with credit exposure and highly sensitive to higher rates, fell 2.4%. Amazon.com (-1.9%) and Microsoft (-1.7%) were among the biggest drags on the market after announcing recent plans to cut thousands of jobs. Shares of Procter & Gamble fell 2.1% after warning of commodity costs pressuring profits. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell 252 points or 0.8%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.8%. And the Nasdaq index shed 105 points or 1%.

Weak US economic data rekindled investor concerns about the outlook for growth and earnings. In speeches, St. Louis Fed President James Bullard and Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester both stressed the need to raise rates beyond 5% to tackle inflation. Shares of IBM fell 3.3% after Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to "equal weight" from "overweight." Microsoft's shares slid 1.9% after it announced plans to cut 10,000 jobs. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell 614 points or 1.8%. The S&P 500 index lost 1.6%. And the Nasdaq index shed 138 points or 1.2%.
