The Australian sharemarket surged by 1.5% on Tuesday, with most sectors finishing higher. The RBA kept rates on hold as expected but flagged lower rates for longer in its first meeting of the year.

The ASX 200 has climbed back above 6,700 points following a solid start to Tuesday’s session. Big name miners, tech and bank stocks are among the major contributors to the market’s overall gains. Silver miners are mostly lower after big surges yesterday.

US sharemarkets rebounded on Monday. Shares of big technology heavyweights Amazon (+4.3%) and Alphabet (+3.6%), which are set to report earnings Tuesday, both rose. Microsoft shares rose 3.3%. Redditor favourite AMC Entertainment (+0.3%) edged higher, while GameStop shares tumbled 30.8% as brokerages removed some trading restrictions. Tesla shares jumped 5.8% after an analyst more than doubled his price target on the electric-car maker. Silver miners Hecla Mining (+28.3%), Coeur Mining (+23.1%) and Wheaton Precious Metals (+5.4%) surged as silver broke above US$30 an ounce for the first time since 2013. The Dow Jones index closed up by 229 points or 0.8% after being 353 points higher earlier in the session. The S&P 500 index was up 1.6% and the Nasdaq index climbed 333 points or 2.6%.

The ASX 200 was looking to extend its losing run from last week with the index opening well in the red but managed to turn things around to lift 55.6 points or 0.84%. Silver miners benefitted from interest from Reddit users in the metal.

The Aussie market is well off its session lows as the ASX 200 still trades nervously following last week’s declines. The major miners are helping to arrest the sharp drop in the opening hour of trade, when the main index was down 1.3%.

Focus remained on a retail trading frenzy, with steep gains recorded for heavily shorted stocks, including GameStop and AMC Entertainment. Shares in GameStop rose 67.9% and AMC rose by 53.7%. But shares in heavyweight tech stocks fell with Apple down 3.7%. Shares in Johnson & Johnson fell 3.6% after releasing results of its Covid-19 vaccine. The Dow Jones index lost 621 points or 2.0%. The S&P 500 index lost 1.9% and the Nasdaq fell by 266.5 points or 2.0%. Over the week the Dow and the S&P500 fell by 3.3% and the Nasdaq lost 3.5%. For the month the Dow lost 2.0%; S&P 500 lost 1.1%; but the Nasdaq rose 1.4%.

The Australian sharemarket fell for a third day, with the ASX 200 slipping by 0.64% due mainly to losses from banks and resource stocks. The local market still managed to finish higher in January for a fourth straight month.
