Intel's shares jumped 7.0% after the chipmaker named a new CEO. Other tech-related names also lifted with Netflix (+2.7%), Amazon (+1.4%) and Apple (+1.6%) all trading higher. Exxon Mobil shares gained 1.1% after JPMorgan upgraded the stock to "overweight". At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 8 points or 0.03%. But the S&P 500 index was 0.2% higher and the Nasdaq index gained 56.5 points or 0.4%.

The Aussie market is falling for a third consecutive day with the ASX 200 weaker at lunch. Losses are rather wide spread with tech & staples among the sharpest decliners while oil stocks thrive.

Investors weighed rising bond yields against a potential US economic recovery and Covid-19 vaccine roll out. Shares of interest rate-sensitive banks Goldman Sachs (+2.9%) and JPMorgan Chase (+1.6%) both lifted. General Motors (+6.2%) shares jumped after launching an electric delivery vehicle business. Tesla shares lifted 4.7% after registering a company in India. Shares of Uber (+7.2%) hit record highs and online retailer Etsy's shares soared 12.1%. But the move higher in shares was capped by a decline in big tech names. Facebook (-2.2%), Netflix (-1.0%), Alphabet (-1.1%), Apple (-0.1%) and Microsoft (-1.2%) shares all fell. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 60 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index rose by just 1.6 points. And the Nasdaq index gained 36 points or 0.3%.

Investors assessed equity valuations and the outlook for more Covid-19 relief stimulus, along with ongoing political turmoil. Fears of a delay in further pandemic stimulus were heightened after House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against US President Donald Trump. Shares of Twitter slumped 6.4% after it permanently suspended Mr. Trump's account. Facebook (-4.0%), Alphabet (-2.3%) and Apple (-2.3%) shares were down as they took action to limit President Trump's social media reach. Tesla shares sank 7.8%. Boeing shares fell 1.5% after the tragic 737-500 jet crash in Indonesia. But Eli Lilly & Co (+11.7%) lifted health care shares. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 89 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index was down 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index lost 165.5 points or 1.3%.
