Shares of Goldman Sachs slid 6.4% after the bank reported a bigger-than-expected drop in quarterly profit, dragging on the Dow Jones index. Insurer Travelers Companies shares fell 4.6% after forecasting fourth-quarter earnings below estimates. But shares of Morgan Stanley jumped 5.9% after the bank beat analysts' estimates for fourth-quarter profit as its trading business got a boost from market volatility. And Tesla shares gained 7.4% after the electric-vehicle maker's January retail sales surged in China following recent price cuts on its top-selling models. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell 392 points or 1.1%. The S&P 500 index lost 0.2%. But the Nasdaq index added 16 points or 0.1%.

The Australian sharemarket finished largely flat today in choppy trade, a day after hitting an 8 ½ month high. Iron ore miners were mostly lower on continued concerns of a potential Chinese crackdown on the commodity.

Investor optimism over the global economy and signs that inflation is coming under control boosted shares. Real estate stocks led gains, up 2.1%. The continent-wide FTSEurofirst 300 index lifted 0.4%. And the UK FTSE 100 index was up 0.2%, inching closer to record highs. Asia-focussed financial stocks HSBC and Prudential rose 0.8% and 2.5%, respectively, on hopes that China's reopening from Covid lockdowns will boost the global economy. US sharemarkets were closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day public holiday.

Shares in JP Morgan Chase rose 2.5% and Bank of America rose 2.2% after earnings beat forecasts. Shares in Wells Fargo rose by 3.3% and shares in Citigroup rose 1.7% despite quarterly earnings falling short of consensus profit forecasts. But shares in Tesla fell 0.9% after announcing price cuts on its electric vehicles in the US and Europe. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index rose 113 points or 0.3%. The S&P 500 index gained 0.4%. And the Nasdaq index added 78 points or 0.7%. Over the week the Dow rose 2.0%; S&P 500 rose 2.7%; Nasdaq rose 4.8%.

US sharemarkets rose on Thursday as cooling US consumer inflation supported bets of smaller interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve. That said, investor concerns remained that the central bank was not close to pausing its policy tightening. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index rose 217 points or 0.6%. The S&P 500 index gained 0.3%. And the Nasdaq index added 69 points or 0.6%.
