While the jump in claims for unemployment benefits is negative for the economy, the hope is that it will accelerate progress on agreeing a fiscal stimulus package. Higher oil prices drove the energy sector higher. Shares in Airbnb Inc. debuted and ended the first day trade at US$144.71 a share, up from the $68 a share offer price. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 70 points or 0.2%. The S&P 500 index ended lower by 0.1%. But the Nasdaq index was up by 67 points or 0.5%.

US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Democrats “poured cold water” on his offer to set aside some issues in an aid bill and rebuffed US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s US$916 billion proposal. Shares of Apple (-2.2%), Microsoft (-2%) and Salesforce (-3.2%) weighed on major indexes. Facebook shares dropped 1.9% after an antitrust lawsuit was filed against the company. Tesla shares slumped 7% after JPMorgan said the electric-car maker is “dramatically” overvalued. Chip stock Qorvo fell 5.6%. But Lowe's shares jumped 5.9% on a US$15 billion share buy-back plan. Food delivery app DoorDash (+85.8%) made its trading debut. The Dow Jones index closed down by 105 points or 0.4%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.8%. And the Nasdaq index lost 244 points or 1.9%.

The ASX 200 has added a further 41pts or 0.6% to extend its winning run to a seventh successive session. The benchmark index is yet to experience declines in December as gains were widespread, led by heavyweights Commonwealth Bank, CSL & BHP.

The S&P 500 index traded above 3,700 for the first time. Sentiment was boosted by news that US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell plans further stimulus talks with the White House. Shares of Johnson & Johnson gained 1.7% on its plans to target COVID-19 late-stage trial results by January. The US health regulator backed Pfizer's (+3.2%) COVID-19 vaccine data. Shares of Moderna climbed 6.5% after Switzerland increased its confirmed orders for its COVID-19 vaccine doses to 7.5 million. The Dow Jones index closed higher by 104 points or 0.4% after hitting an intraday record high. The S&P 500 index was up by 0.3% and the Nasdaq index lifted by 63 points or 0.5% -both closing at record highs.

The Aussie market has gone six trading days without a loss as the ASX 200 saw a modest rise of 0.2% or 13pts to 6,688. The benchmark index has also closed back in positive territory for 2020 & has jumped ~50% from its March lows.
