New York City and Chicago announced fresh restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus. Pfizer (+0.8%) and its partner BioNTech (+4%) revealed a 95% success rate at the conclusion of their COVID-19 vaccine trial. Retailer Lowe's shares dipped 8.2% after its earnings missed analysts' expectations. Shares of Target (+2.3%) advanced on soaring sales. Boeing shares fell 3.2%, despite the Federal Aviation Administration lifting its ban on the 737 Max aircraft. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 345 points or 1.2% after rising as much as 147 points at session highs. The S&P 500 index was also down 1.2%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 98 points or 0.8%.

Disappointing US retail sales data, surging virus cases and worries about shutdowns dented sentiment. Shares of pharmacy owner CVS Health (-8.6%) and Walgreens Boots Alliance (-9.6%) both dropped after Amazon (+0.2%) launched an online pharmacy. But retailers Walmart (-2%), Home Depot (-2.5%) and Kohl's (+11.6%) all beat earnings expectations. Tesla shares jumped 8.2% on news that it would join the S&P 500 index on December 21. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 167 points or 0.6% after being down 430 points at session lows. The S&P 500 index dipped 0.5%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 24 points or 0.2%.

The Aussie market lifted slightly following more optimism around a COVID-19 vaccine. The ASX 200 lifted 0.2% or 13.9pts to 6,498 as banking, energy & travel stocks outperformed while tech & safe havens fell.

The Aussie market only managed to trade for ~20 minutes to start the new trading week as a market data issue at the ASX caused an outage for the remainder of the session. In the brief time the market was open, it was rather positive for the ASX 200 which continued to hit fresh 8-month highs with a gain of 79pts or 1.23%.
