Shares in Pfizer rose 3.3% after it said it could seek authorisation for a vaccine it is working on in November. There was continued wrangling over a new pandemic relief package. Economic data was mixed. This week 49 of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported earnings. Of those, 86% beat expectations, according to Refinitiv. The Dow Jones index rose by 112 points or 0.4%. The S&P500 index edged 0.5 points higher or less than 0.1%, But the Nasdaq index was down by 42 points or 0.4%. Over the week, the Dow rose by 0.1%; S&P 500 rose 0.2%; and Nasdaq rose 0.8%.

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits hit two-month highs last week. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Democrats that a COVID-19 relief package won't wait until January after US President Trump said he'd offer more than US$1.8 trillion in aid. Shares of Morgan Stanley rose by 1.3% after it beat third-quarter profit estimates. Walgreens Boots Alliance shares gained 4.8% on its 2021 profit growth forecast. But United Airlines (-3.8%) reported a 78% drop in quarterly revenue. Vertex Pharmaceuticals shares sank 20.7% after it discontinued its protein deficiency disorder treatment trial. Facebook shares dropped 1.9% on Financial Times reports of potential EU plans to curb the power of big tech companies. The Dow Jones index fell by 19 points or 0.1% -after being down 332 points at session lows. The S&P500 index lost 0.2% and the Nasdaq index was down by 54 points or 0.5%.
