The Australian sharemarket is lifting by 1.5% at lunch, recouping most of Tuesday’s decline and bouncing off yesterday’s one-month low. Australia’s economy contracted by 7% over the June quarter.

Solid factory data fuelled optimism about the US economic recovery. Apple shares rose 4% on reports of orders for 75 million 5G iPhones later this year. Shares of Zoom Video surged 40.8% after it raised its annual revenue forecast by over 30%. Walmart shares lifted 6.3% after it unveiled a new loyalty program, Walmart Plus. But Tesla shares lost 4.7% after announcing plans to sell up to US$5 billion in stock. The Dow Jones index rose by 215 points or 0.8%. The S&P500 index also lifted 0.8% and the Nasdaq index rose 164 points or 1.4% -both closing at record highs.

The Aussie market has suffered its worst declines in over a month with the ASX 200 tumbling 107 points or 1.8% to 5,953 on broad selling. Every sector closed in the red with financials, technology and consumer staples among the worst performers. Defensive names such as utilities and gold stocks were among the few winners.

It has been a tough start to the new month with the ASX 200 deeply in the red. Losses have been widespread as financials, technology, energy and consumer staples weigh heavily as roughly 90% of the top 200 stocks fall. The AUD is a winner so far as it closes in on 74 US cents.

Some investors booked profits at the end of the month. Shares in Tesla rose 12.6% and shares in Apple rose 3.4% after both companies effected stock splits. The Dow Jones index fell by 224 points or 0.8%. The S&P500 index fell by 0.2%. But the Nasdaq index gained 80 points or 0.7% to record highs. For the month the Dow rose by 7.6%; the S&P 500 rose by 7%; and the Nasdaq rose by 9.6%. It was the best August gain for the Dow Jones since 1984. It was the best August gain for the S&P 500 since 1986.

The Aussie market has fallen on Monday in what was choppy trade. The ASX 200 fell 13 points or 0.2% to 6,060 with Fortescue’s 7.7% decline weighing most. Even with today’s losses, the ASX 200 index improved for a fifth month in a row while the AUD is at the best levels since December 2018.

S sharemarkets rose on Friday with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq at record highs. The S&P 500 is on track to its best August gain in 34 years. Investor sentiment was supported by reports that President Trump was willing to sign the 1.3 trillion coronavirus relief bill. The Dow Jones index rose by 162 points or 0.6%. The S&P500 index lifted 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index gained 70 points or 0.6%. Over the week the Dow rose 2.6%, the S&P 500 gained 3.3% and the Nasdaq rose 3.4%.
