Investors reacted to a surprise lift in new claims for unemployment insurance. After releasing profit numbers, shares in Tesla fell 5.0% and Microsoft fell 4.4%. Shares in Apple lost 4.6% on reports that it could face consumer protection investigations in some states. But shares in Twitter rose 4.1% after reporting highest ever annual growth of daily users. The Dow Jones index fell by 354 points or 1.3%. The S&P500 index eased by 1.2%. And the Nasdaq index lost 245 points or 2.3%.

Banks and miners are trading lower on Thursday hampering the efforts of the overall market. On Thursday after the Fiscal & Economic update saw Australian Treasury forecast a 2020-21 budget deficit of $184.5bn, Real GDP is forecast to fall by ¼ per cent in 2019-20 and by 2½ per cent in 2020-21.

Investors continue to fret about the rising number of COVID-19 cases. And not helping sentiment was an increase in tensions between China and the US. In addition, Congressional Democrats and Republicans reportedly remained divided on the details of a new stimulus package expected to cost $1 trillion. The Dow Jones index rose by 165 points or 0.6%. Local shares fell heavily at lunch, with the ASX 200 down 1.1 per cent to 6,088.7, receiving an extra push lower following a record 484 new COVID-19 cases in Victoria over the past day. On Tuesday the ASX 200 rose by 2.6 per cent, making it the best daily advance in five weeks, hitting a six-week intraday high and the best close since early March.

Investor sentiment was buoyed by progress shown on three potential COVID-19 vaccines. And the European stimulus deal also boosted investor sentiment. Investors were also hopeful about a new US stimulus package with less than two weeks to go until the expiry of extended payments for job seekers. Investors monitored profit results. So far 58 companies of the S&P 500 have reported earnings and 77.6% of results have beaten forecasts according to Refinitiv. The Dow Jones index rose by 160 points or 0.6%. The S&P500 index lifted by 0.2%. But the Nasdaq index fell by 87 points or 0.8% from record highs.

Hovering around intraday highs, the ASX 200 has lifted by 1.1 per cent to 6,068.9. While most sectors are improving, gains from tech stocks, financials, healthcare and materials are standing out.
