Initial jobless claims posted their smallest weekly decline since March. Florida posted a record number of virus-related deaths. Shares of big tech companies Microsoft (-2%) and Apple (-1.2%) both fell. Bank of America shares lost 2.7% as the company set aside US$4 billion for coronavirus-related losses. Morgan Stanley shares rose 2.5% after posting a record quarterly profit. Shares of Johnson & Johnson rose by 0.7% after reporting better-than-expected earnings. It was a volatile day for the Australian sharemarket, with the ASX 200 up this morning, down as much as 1% at one stage only to finish 0.7% lower by the close. Mining, healthcare and bank stocks were among the worst performers.

US sharemarkets lifted following news of progress made by biotech, Moderna, on a COVID-19 vaccine. News on a potential vaccine from the University of Oxford could also be announced on Thursday. Economic data also encouraged investors. Travel-related stocks rose between 7-20%. Shares in Goldman Sachs rose 1.4% after it said trading revenue doubled in the second quarter. The Dow Jones index rose by 228 points or 0.9%. The S&P500 rose by 0.9%; the Nasdaq rose by 62 points or 0.6%.

Even as rising COVID-19 cases remains a cause for concern, the Aussie market rallied to its best day in around a month on optimism from promising vaccine trial results in the US. The ASX 200 rallied 112 points or 1.88% to 6053 on broad based gains.

Following profit announcements, shares in Citigroup fell 3.9% while Wells Fargo was down 4.6% after reporting a loss for the first time since the 2008 global financial crisis. But shares in JP Morgan rose by 0.6% after a smaller-than-expected fall in second-quarter profit. The broader market was supported by energy, materials, health and consumer staples.
