The ASX 200 has managed to close higher for a fourth consecutive session with the index closing 13.5 points or roughly 0.25% to 5573 after opening close to 1% weaker. The turnaround had much to do with the performance of the financials while IT stocks also outperformed. The main laggards included resource stocks and utilities.

US sharemarkets fell on Tuesday following reports that Moderna's ( 10.4%) COVID 19 vaccine study didn't produce enough critical data to assess its success. Home Depot shares fell 3% after missing quarterly profit estimates. Kohl's shares fell 7.7% after reporting a bigger than expected loss. Walmart's shares fell 2.1% despite the grocer exceeding expectations for quarterly revenue. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index fell by 390 points or 1.6%. The S&P500 index was down by 1.1%. And the Nasdaq index was down by 49 points or 0.5%.

The Aussie market has lifted for a third consecutive session as market optimism increases on COVID-19 vaccine hopes. The ASX 200 jumped as much as 2.6% before settling 99 points or 1.8% higher to 5,559.5. The materials and energy sectors helping drive gains most as commodity prices rebound.

Local shares followed their northern hemisphere counterparts higher on Tuesday as hopes for a COVID-19 vaccine energised market optimists. Energy names led the gains after oil prices vaulted higher overnight, banks names joined the upswing, having been laggards in the recent recovery.

US sharemarkets soared on Monday. Drugmaker Moderna's shares rallied by 20% after the company reported "positive" phase one results for a potential COVID-19 vaccine. The S&P airlines sub index added 13.9% as Delta Air Lines (+13.9%) said it would resume flights in June. United Airlines (+21.1%) and Boeing (+12.9%) shares both lifted. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index rose by 912 points or 3.9%. The S&P500 index was higher by 3.2% and the Nasdaq index rose by 220 points or 2.4%.

Local shares have posted solid gains in early trade on Monday lead higher by the big miners and Energy names after prices for the underlying prices rose in recent days. Over the last week iron ore rose by US$4.80 or 5.4%, The US Nymex price lifted by 19% last week.

The Trump Administration moved to block global chip supplies to blacklisted telecoms equipment company Huawei Technologies. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up by 60 points or 0.3%. The S&P500 index was higher by 0.4% and the Nasdaq index rose by 71 points or 0.8%. Over the week the Dow fell 2.7%, the S&P 500 fell by 2.3% and the Nasdaq fell 1.2%.
