US sharemarkets were higher on Thursday, with returns for the Nasdaq index turning positive for the year. Shares of tech giants Apple, Facebook and Alphabet rose by 1.0%-1.8%. Shares of PayPal jumped by 14.0% after the company said it expects a strong recovery in payment volumes in the second quarter as social distancing drives more people to shop online. Shares of media company ViacomCBS rose by 10.4% after reporting solid first quarter earnings. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up 211 points or 0.9%. The S&P500 index was up by 1.2% and the Nasdaq index lifted 125 points or 1.4%.

The Aussie market has fallen for a second successive session with the #ASX 200 slipping 20pts or 0.38% to 5,364. Financials were again the major weight as the big four banks all lost ground while Macquarie Group (MQG) edged higher ahead of its full year profit results out tomorrow. Gains for mining, technology and healthcare names helped restrict further losses.

Oil prices surged on demand hopes as California eased virus lockdown restrictions. Shares of Chevron lifted 1.6%. Pfizer shares lifted by 2.4% after the pharmaceutical giant said it started coronavirus vaccine trials in humans. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals shares gained 6.0% after the company said its antibody virus cocktail may be available in the coming months. Tech giants Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft lifted 1.1-2.0%. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index rose by 133 points or 0.6%. The S&P500 index was up 0.9% and the Nasdaq index rose by 98 points or 1.1%.
