US sharemarkets fell on Monday as crude oil prices plunged, while investors turned cautious over what is expected to be a disappointing week for earnings and economic data. Energy sector shares fell by 3.3%, led lower by Exxon Mobil (-4.7%) and Chevron (-4.1%). Boeing (-6.8%) was the worst performer on the Dow Jones Index. Shares of United Airlines fell by 4.4% after it warned of a US$2.1 billion pre-tax loss in the first quarter. But "stay-at-home" stocks Amazon.com (+0.8%), Netflix (+3.4%) and Roku (+2.6%) all climbed. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 592 points or 2.4%. The S&P500 index fell by 1.8% and the Nasdaq index fell by 89 points or 1.0%.

The ASX 200 was softer for most of the session but saw some heavy selling in the last 30 mins of the session to close at the lows of the day. The index ended down 134.5 points or 2.45% to 5,353 and suffering its largest daily decline since March 27 where it fell 5.3% in a day.

European share markets closed firmer on Friday, the seventh gain in eight sessions. Investors were encouraged by US President Trump's plans to reopen the US economy. Sentiment was also buoyed after US drug maker Gilead Sciences said it was making progress in developing a virus vaccine. US share markets also ended sharply higher on Friday. Shares of Boeing, a component of the Dow Jones index of 30 stocks, rose 14.7% on plans to resume production next week. The Dow Jones index closed higher by almost 705 points or 3.0%. The S&P500 index rose by 2.7% and the Nasdaq index gained 118 points or 1.4%. Over the week the Dow rose by 2.2% and the S&P 500 rose by 3%.
